Tarot and Astrology

The weekend before last I had a number of requests - as always at this time of the year - for my 'tip' for the Grand National. The half joking, as ever, is that 'if one really is a fortune teller then one would know.' Well, one isn't, try the tea leaves. However, there was one thing I had felt strongly and which I mentioned to several of those asking - I had a bad feeling about McKelvey, poor doomed McKelvey, championed by the BBC in the weeks leading up to the race following his recovery from injury after placing 2nd last year. The more I saw the BBC coverage during those weeks before, the more I could 'see' it ending tragically. And it did: McKelvey fell awkwardly, unseating his rider, tried gamely to continue, riderless, then reared and fell backwards. It was awful. He had broken his back. This isn't something you want to foresee.

Of course, this has been impressive for those to whom I had stated my misgivings. "How do you KNOW these things?" Well, I don't know, that is - I don't KNOW those things. It was a prediction, and it was right. The more the BBC hyped the story beforehand, the more it focused me on the possibility of it turning out tragically and I could very clearly 'see' the One Show dealing with the bad news and explaining it to the viewers who had come to follow this poor horse's progress with so much more than the usual level of interest. When the worst did happen, my first thought was - 'I KNEW it was going to happen... I predicted it!" Wrong and right. I didn't know, I did predict. Once it happened, it becomes 'precognition' or 'premonition' and is readily shifted to the arcane.

Quite simply, McKelvey had been recovering from injury, had only turned out for two hurdles races in the run up to the National, and was carrying an awful lot of expectation. It was a tragedy waiting to happen and such things are not difficult to 'read.' This is clairvoyance - 'clear-sightedness' - seeing all the factors and pressures and extrapolating a likely outcome. This is prediction, not premonition or precognition.

It is what good Tarot readers do as a matter of course. Prediction is a reading of stated facts, of unspoken 'words between the lines', of minute signals glimpsed in shifting expressions, tone of voice, body language... of responses to the oracular nature of the cards. It happens somewhere on the border of the conscious and the subconscious, a leaping, weaving salmon of darting thought pointing a direction. Some of us are better able to tune ourselves to these signals, better able to decipher their strange content.
